How Far We've Fallen

Then and now.

A comment on the Eisenhower speech; notice at the end he says that only an "alert and informed citizenry" can save the republic from the military-industrial complex. If he was right, we are really screwed.

Of course, Eisenhower also said; "Things are more like they are now than they ever were before."

If you want evidence of people being dumb (or evil or selfish), you can find it.

If you want evidence of people being smart (or good or selfless), you can find it.

It's true people are not as informed as they ought to be however, there is also a lot more to be informed about these days.

It's very possible (obvious, even) that human nature is not yet ready for democracy (with the highly developed sense of personal responsibility and sense of connectedness to the whole that would be required)

Average people (ones like the folks being made fun of in the video) are drawn into positive action by exemplars of good behavior.

What's that saying about it being better to light a candle than curse the darkness?
